How Central Osteopaths Can Help You

How Central Osteopaths can help you – evidence based care for a range of conditions.

Specialists in muscle and joint pains, Osteopaths are highly trained and regulated Allied Health Care professionals, as recognised by the NHS. At Central Osteopaths in Derby, we provide high-quality, evidence based management of a wide range of complaints, from sciatica, neck pain, shoulders, hips, knees and sports injuries – not just back pain!

Not just backs, and not all cracks

Some people have the misconception that Osteopathy is synonymous with a specific treatment technique called ‘High Velocity Thrust’ (HVT) also known as a Grade 5 manipulation, or simply a ‘manipulation’. This often produces an audible ‘click’. Although Osteopaths are often considered specialists at this technique, it is just one of many different techniques or intervention an Osteopath may use. At Central Osteopaths ‘HVT’s’ make up a small part of what we do. Some treatments consist primarily of massage-type treatment, others may be based primarily around learning exercises to stretch or strengthen. We are able to bring together all these modalities together with our expert knowledge, to get you better. Many people are surprised by how quickly they improve after months or even years of massage, chiropractors, or ‘waiting and seeing’.

Regulation and training

In the UK, the osteopathic profession is regulated by the General Osteopathic Council and by law, an osteopath must be registered with the Council to practise. To remain registered, they must comply with strict regulatory requirements and high standards of professional practice. They must also maintain regular professional development. These requirements give patients the same sort of guarantees and protection as those given by doctors and dentists.

Our Head Osteopath, Matt Penman completed his studies with a Masters degree (MOst). Training takes a minimum of four years and includes a requirement to have over 1000 hours clinical experience with patients prior to registration. Osteopaths are recognised by NHS England as Allied Health Professionals, playing a critical role in the diagnosis, treatment and care of people of all ages.

Matt here at Central Osteopaths is also a member of the Institute of Osteopathy, and voluntary body working together with the top professionals in the field to ensure the highest standards of care, through education, training, and communication.

Treatment rationale

Osteopathic practice is a safe and effective form of prevention, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of health issues. Osteopaths are highly trained healthcare professionals who are experts in the musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles and associated tissues) and its relationship to other systems of the body, to keep you as healthy as you can be. You do not need to consult your GP before you visit an osteopath.. What to expect Osteopaths are highly skilled professionals who are trained in diagnosing health issues, including those which may require further investigation. When you first visit an osteopath you’ll be asked about your current symptoms and medical history. All information will be treated as confidential in accordance with the standards of practice set out by the General Osteopathic Council and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), May 2018.

Osteopathic care is based on the individual needs of the patient and so varies depending on your age, fitness levels and diagnosis. Osteopaths use a wide range of gentle hands-on techniques that focus on releasing tension, stretching muscles and mobilising joints. The health risks associated with having osteopathic treatment are extremely low. If you have any concerns about your treatment, we encourage you to raise them with your osteopath who will be happy to discuss them with you.

Rehab

Matt has a special interest in the use of exercise and movement as both treatment and rehabilitation. The evidence supporting the importance of regular movement, and having a strong body in both the treatment and prevention of many health conditions, and at Central Osteopaths we can explore ways of helping you move more and get stronger – in a way that works for you.
